Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 2004

Banning muscle building prohormones

On October 22, 2004, President George Bush used his legislative power to sign into law the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004. The acts was ratified by the U.S. Congress earlier in the month, and expanded upon the original Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990. At the center of the law was the addition of 26 new steroid compounds to the previous list of substances that are legally defined as anabolic steroids and placed under Schedule III of the list of controlled substances.

While some of the ?new? muscle building compounds are true anabolic steroids that were missed in the original legislation of 1990, many are actually pro-hormones that were developed to cash in on the banning of anabolic steroids over a decade before. The new addictions include:

?androstanediol

?androstanedione
?androstenediol
?androstenedione
?bolasterone
?calusterone
?*1-dihydrotestosterone (a.k.a. 1-testosterone)
?furazabol
?13b-ethyl-17a-hydroxygon-4-en-3-one
?4-hydroxytestosterone
?4-hydroxy-19-nortestosterone
?mestanolone
?17a-methyl-3b,17b-dihydroxy-5a-androstane
?17a-methyl-3a,17b-dihydroxy-5a-androstane
?17a-methyl-3b,17b-dihydroxyandrost-4-ene
?17a-methyl-4-hydroxynandrolone
?methyldienolone
?methyltrienolone
?17a-methyl-*1-dihydrotestosterone (a.k.a. 17-a-methyl-1-testosterone)
?norandrostenediol
?norandrostenedione
?norbolethone
?norclostebol
?normethandrolone
?stenbolone
?tetrahydrogestrinone

Where the old law of 1990 required the use of the phrase ?promotes muscle growth?, the new act dispenses with this. No longer would the Attorney General have to prove that a compound had anabolic properties. The revised criteria states that the compound only needs to be ?chemically and pharmacologically-related? to the male hormone testosterone. Such creative language effectively places most of the newly-developed prohormones in the banned category.

Alternatives to Steroids - Prohormones and related compounds

It?s not surprising that with arrival of the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990, many law-abiding bodybuilders would look for legal, over-the-counter muscle-building alternatives. And recognizing the billions of dollars to be made, it wasn?t long before supplement manufacturers responded with prohormones and other closely-related products.

If Ben Johnson?s positive drug test in 1988 was the ?coming out party? for muscle building steroids, prohormones got their biggest boost from former baseball slugger, Mark McGuire. During the 1998 baseball season, both McGuire and Sammy Sosa put on a tremendous exhibition of slugging power as they both chased Roger Maris? single-season home run record of 61. McGuire smashed the record with 70 and seemed to be the perfect role model for kids, but his ?idol status? was short-lived as a roving sport?s reporter spotted the supplement, androstenedione, one of the powerful new prohormones, in his locker.

Detox Aids The Myth Of Detoxing

Many people buy detox aids looking for a quick miracle fix just from taking a branded supplement, which will cleanse your body, but there is no evidence to support many of these claims.

If you want to detox properly it involves eating the RIGHT Diet to detox your body not simply adding a detox aid. Detoxing is not that simple!

There are some easy ways to detox and this involves simply a change to diet and don?t forget your body?s organs are designed to detox without any help from branded pills or juices!

Let?s look at the myth of detox aids and how to detox properly.

The body has its own detoxification system already!

Most of the pills, juices teas and oils sold as detox aids have no scientific foundation to back up their claims, yet people still buy them looking for a quick fix!

The reality of detoxing is that the body has its own in build detoxifiers namely the liver, kidneys, skin intestines and lungs and they are designed to remove and excrete toxins within hours of consumption.

Want to detox? Change your eating habits

The fact is to detoxify your body all you have to do is make simple changes to your diet.

If you simply drunk more water (at least 2 litres a day) and ate more fruit and vegetables your skin would look better and you would feel healthier.

Combine the above with removing from your diet what you know is bad for you i.e alcohol cigarettes and caffeine and you will compound the feeling of well being.

Think about it if our bodies can naturally detox and we simply add foods we know are good for us and remove ones we know are bad, the body will take care of the rest.

Logic tells you that if the body has organs to detoxify then how can a pill or juice help?

If you are in eating foods which are bad, a branded pill or juice cannot save your liver from alcohol or your lungs from smoke.

Detox naturally

All you need to do is eat a healthy diet and skip the detox aids. So, what foods need to be removed? Here is a list of essentials:

Red meat
Alcohol
Tea coffee and anything with caffeine in it
Sugar
Dairy products cheese eggs and full fat milk
All processed and junk foods
All processed carbohydrates such as white bread and pasta

Keep in mind you if you eat naturally the body will take care of itself and if you do fill it with toxins there is no miracle cure to remove them that?s left to your over worked specialist detox organs !

Eat raw vegetables, unsweetened fruit juices, brown rice, lean chicken and turkey, fish and drink plenty of water and you will be getting healthy foods that put the minimum of strain on your organs.

Some natural aids

If you want some natural aids try:

Milk thistle to help liver function, bio yoghurt to boost probiotics to help digestion in the gut and finally, wheat bran, which speeds up the passage of food through the colon and gives your digestive system a good clean at the same ? Its nickname is natures broom and its name is well earned.

Detoxing don?t believe the myths

The above is totally logical and common sense.

Branded detox aids are of little use and feed on people?s desire for a quick fix. Alas, like all quick fixes if they sound too good to be true and they are.

Your body can detoxify itself, but you well help it by cutting out bad foods eating naturally and drinking lots of water, to help your organs do what they were designed to do by mother nature without the help of a branded pill or juice.

Natural Antibiotics

CINNAMON BARK (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)- A powerful antiseptic oil with a strong pungent, spicy aroma and reddish brown color. Cinnamon has a long tradition of use, having been produced in Sri Lanka for more than 2,000 years.

Research shows that virus, bacteria, and fungus cannot survive in the presence of cinnamon oil. Cinnamon bark oil has even stronger antiseptic properties than Cinnamon Leaf and readily kills bacterial and fungal infections.

Historically Cinnamon has been used in the Middle East and the Orient for combating viruses and infectious diseases. It has been used as a treatment for fever, diarrhea and menstrual irregularities, as well as indigestion, cramps, nausea, vomiting and colic. Inflammations of the throat and pharynx may also be relieved through its use. Inhalation of Cinnamon has proven effective for relieving respiratory infections.

In Ayurvedic medicine Cinnamon is used to relieve many common complaints such as those already noted and to balance the various doshas or body types: Vata, Pita and Kapha.

The trees are cut every two years to just above ground level. The bark is harvested from the new shoots, then dried. The outer bark is stripped away, leaving the inner bark, which is the primary part of the herb used for medicinal purposes. The medicinal value of the herb is attributed to the oil extracted from the inner bark as well as the leaves.

Cinnamon bark is one of the most popular food flavoring and a valued commodity on the world market. Because it kills the bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease Cinnamon Bark is a common ingredient in many common oral hygiene products like toothpaste, mouthwash and breath fresheners. It is also used for making perfume, soap, chewing gum, lip stick, nasal spray, cough syrup and soda pop drinks.

Cinnamon Bark continues to be a valued treatment for various common ailments. As in ancient times modern day herbalists continue to prescribe cinnamon bark as a remedy for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and indigestion. Chinese herbalists recommend it for asthma sufferers when their symptoms are brought on by cold, digestive disturbances, backache, or menstrual related difficulties.

Cinnamon bark is known to regulate blood sugar levels and may reduce the amount of insulin required for glucose metabolism by diabetics. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) researchers found a dose of 1/8 to 1/4 tsp of ground cinnamon to be beneficial in regulating blood glucose levels.

I rely on Cinnamon Bark in my health care practice to keep the air fresh and clear of bugs and for preventing the spread of infection. Clients absolutely love its fresh, clean scent and enjoy the benefits it so readily bestows that of preventing and relieving cold and flu symptoms.

Cinnamon?s powerful scent is a definite pick-me-up! It is useful for relieving brain fog, common among chronic pain sufferers, as well as the winter blahs.

Cinnamon Leaf essential oil enhances circulation making it excellent for warming you when you are feeling chilled down to your bones! Try 1-8 drops of Cinnamon Bark or Leaf essential oil blended in 1 ounce of Jojoba oil and massage your feet with a small amount of the mixture then put on your socks and enjoy warm happy feet all day!

Keep warm when engaging in winter outdoor sports by rubbing a small amount of this same mixture on your chest and abdominal area, as well as over the lung area on your back.

Please note: There are many cheap chemical copies of essential oils available, but these are not recommended for therapeutic use. For best results always use ethically wild crafted or pure, organic essential oils that are pesticide free!

CAUTION: An intensely powerful oil to be used with respect and extreme caution. Generally not for skin applications except in weak dilutions of less than 1%. May cause an allergic reaction in some individuals. Due to its stimulating properties should be avoided during pregnancy, by lactating mothers, or young children.

Acupuncture for High Blood Pressure ? A New Treatment That Works

Since times immemorial, Acupuncture is a unique treatment for reducing high blood pressure in human beings. High blood pressure refers to a situation where blood starts exerting pressure against the walls of arteries, veins and also the chambers of the heart. Over a specified time period, this heavy rush of blood starts damaging the lining of the blood vessels. It can also lead to arteriosclerosis, meaning hardening of the arteries.

Symptoms of high blood pressure

High blood pressure symptoms are often acute in human beings. They include sudden dizziness, flushed faces, nervousness, severe headaches, restlessness, difficult breathing, nose bleeding, insomnia, intestinal complaints, depression, short temper and emotional instability. The diagnosis of high blood pressure is done when the normal pressure tends to repeatedly rise. The other physical symptoms of high blood pressure includes constant tendency to urinate, decrease in eye vision and muscle weakness.

Electro-acupuncture treatments

Acupuncture combined with electric stimulation or electro-acupuncture can lower elevations of blood pressure in human beings. When the research was conducted for the first time, acupuncture needles were inserted on the inside of the forearm just above the wrist, but to no avail. Researchers then started adding electric stimulation to the needles, which means that electric would start flowing from the needles to the body. While high frequency of stimulation had no effect, low frequencies of electro stimulation reduced blood pressure effectively.

A thorough research on acupuncture shows that the inserted needles excites brain cells, causing them to release neurotransmitters that always heighten the heart?s activities. To cure high blood pressure, acupuncture inserts needles on certain points on the wrist, forearm or leg, to excite the opioid chemicals in the brain and reduce excitatory responses of the cardiovascular systems. This eventual decrease in heart activity and need for oxygen can lower blood pressure to a great extent. It also promotes in the healing of other heart-related conditions like myocardial ischemia and hypertensions.

Other acupuncture treatments to reduce high blood pressure

While you are undergoing acupuncture treatments for curing high blood pressure, you can also use herbs like Tian Ma [Gastrodia Rhizome, Xia Ku Cao [Prunella and Shan Zha to reduce high blood pressure. You should inject the juices of these herbs into your blood to achieve better results.

A unique and natural acupuncture treatment for high blood pressure also include pressing of the skin on the back of your hand in between the thumb and index finger.

Listening Deeply: Feeling a Connection with Sound

One of my favorite things to do when I was younger was go to air shows. There, I could feel the planes flying over me, even before I could see them. Having been born with a hearing impairment made me particularly sensitive to sound, and I had to figure out a way to do more with sound than just listen, because that was difficult. With this challenge, I discovered early on that sound could be felt, as well as heard. It was always clear to me that others didn?t have this same relationship with sound; they were almost oblivious to it. Most people respond to music, and can dance to a beat, but beyond that hearing tends to be a lost art.

All people can relate to music; sound can soothe the soul. There seems to be something about the rhythm and beat that makes people stop and take notice ? they can focus on the sound for a period of minutes, which is usually very hard to accomplish! Music may remind people of a time in their lives, or inspire a particular memory, or mark an occasion. Most people understand the power of music, at least on a superficial level. So what is it about sound that people are missing?

The missing piece is the feeling, the understanding of how ingrained sound is in all of us. Western society has become so dependent on sight that it?s almost impossible to get people to look away from the TV, or a car crash, or the computer screen. Many people wear glasses to correct their vision, but only 1 in 10 people who needs a hearing aid will wear it. Why have our eyes taken over and left us unable to really listen?

I have a theory ? it?s one that I?ve been developing for a long time, but I think it?s a sound one: The eyes disconnect us, while the ears connect us. Why is this important? The eyes see and filter information, and then the brain has to interpret it. The ears, however, have no filter, so although the brain is given all the data, it can interpret the information however it wants. No matter what we do, our eyes will distort and mask what is really possible, and our brains can mask and distort. This distortion makes us see things as apart from us; everything is ?out there.? Our ears, however, are open. Our ears give us an experience; we even can feel sound internally, if we practice, just as I did as a kid.

It?s important to re-train our interpreter ? the brain ? to hear sounds more clearly and not rely so heavily on our eyes. Nada yoga, the yoga of deep listening, is a practice that can help us to hear and feel sound. Nada yoga encourages us to tune in to our world and to stop interpreting so much with our brains. When we take time to focus on a sound ?a song, for instance ? it can soothe our brains. When we tune into ambient noise and stop labeling everything as ?good? sound or ?bad? sound, our brains become trained to accept all sounds. When we listen to the people with whom we are in relationships, we also become more tuned in to our inter-connectedness, because they often say similar things to what we would say in a given situation.

Science tells us that all of us are vibration; the entire universe is composed most fundamentally of vibration ? sound. If that?s the case, it is clearly important to listen to the vibrations you can hear. That first crucial step eventually will lead you down a path of understanding everything as vibration. When you can feel that vibration, then you are connected with everything, because it?s all vibration, including you. This vibration cannot be seen with the eyes; in fact, the eyes mask it and make us see things as different, separate, and not connected. Only the ears can allow us to hear, and eventually feel, our similarities ? if we listen deeply enough.

Acne A general Overview

A general overview:

Acne is not a very nice thing to have and of course everyone who suffers from it want to get rid of it, which is understandable. It is quite common among children and teenagers, but also among the adult population. It is a myth that it will just go away as you progress from child to teen to adult.

There are quite a few myths surrounding acne so lets clear a few of the up now.

It is a myth that eating fatty and greasy foods can lead to acne problems. There is absolutely no link between the two. A lot of studies have been conducted and scientists report that this is indeed a myth.

It is a myth that getting a tan can help to clear acne. Having a golden brown glow to your skin will help to cover up the red acne patches but it certainly wont heal it. You may even do more damage with long exposure to UV light creating even more problems for yourself.

It is a myth that washing your face will decrease the number of acne breakouts you have. Removing dirt and oil from your face is a good thing but if you over do it can decrease the essential oils, which can cause irritation and discomfort. It then takes longer for the acne to heal.

It is a myth that you can't wear make up or shave with acne. Yes, you can. As long as they dont clog your pores it is fine. Some products actually contain certain chemicals that help to combat acne.

So there you have a few of the myths surrounding acne but before we get on to any of the acne medicine lets just run through a few simple tips that any sufferer should be doing to help fight acne:

Avoid scrubbing the affected area - if you scrub the area you will create micro breaks in the skin which allow the acne causing bacteria inside. You want to keep the skin as intact as possible to create a natural barrier.

Avoid very cold weather - cold weather, along with hot, can cause pores to clog, which as we know helps acne spread. It sounds a bit silly but always try to keep warm!

Try swimming or other light exercise - this can reduce overall stress, which could be a key factor among acne sufferers.

Clean clothes, sheets, towels and any other daily used fabric more often than usual - this will help to combat the growth of the acne causing bacteria. The less of that around the better! It might mean a bit more washing and ironing but will be worth it in the long run!

In actual fact the best acne medicine is to take good care of the affected areas simply by cleansing it and applying certain creams or gels that are known to cause relief (explained later).

Basic acne skin care involves the following:

-Gently wash the skin about twice a day with a normal skin cleanser. Do not use a rough or hard sponge or anything as this will make it worse and always remember to properly rinse the skin afterwards.

-Apart from cleansing the affected areas try not to touch your acne. Especially don't try and squeeze it as this could cause a break in the skin, which could lead to infection. If this occurs then scarring could be the end result - not good!

-Gentle exfoliation can remove the build up of dead skin cells to help stop it spreading. Again, be sure to cleanse and rinse the affected area thoroughly.

This basic acne skin care will help with the day to day discomfort of acne. There is a lot of good acne medicine on the market today that can also be used to alleviate the problems of acne. Some good acne medicine products are mentioned below.

Cooling Gel Masks - these do not directly rid you of acne but they do help to clear the pores. When used regularly this can be very effective and reduces redness and blemishes and can help to control acne breakouts

Acne Cleansers - there are a lot of these on the market and are all roughly the same. They contain a cocktail of solutions to help clear, tone and generally fight acne. They can be found in any pharmacy or on the internet.

Acne Fighting Masks - these are designed to be worn overnight and help to control the production of excess oils that contribute to the cause of acne. Some of these products are all natural and have had great success. Again, they can mostly be found in any pharmacy or on the internet.

Hopefully this article has been of some help and the methods that have been outlined can be used to alleviate your acne problems.

Blackheads The Whole Truth

One very common types of acne are blackheads. Blackheads are considered open comedones, and whiteheads are closed comedones. These usually show up primarily on the nose, chin or forehead but can also be on other parts of the face. Either can cause your skin to be undesirably rough and bumpy.

Blackheads are one of the few types of acne that may be caused by skin hygiene and will never go away on their own. Cleaning your face regularly will prevent most blackheads altogether. They are caused by follicles that have a wider opening than normal. These openings fill with oil and dead cells that have undergone a chemical reaction that caused the oxidation of melanin, which causes the black coloration. To prevent them from forming, it is necessary to consistently wash your face twice a day with a mild soap or face scrub to get rid of the excess oil and dead cells.

The most commonly used treatment is called tretonoin, and can be found in medicines called Retin-A, and Avita. It is derived from Vitamin A and works by increasing the cell turnover and un-sticking the sloughed cells. This causes the plugged material to be removed so that the skin can heal. The downside to this medicine is that it can be irritating to most people's skin. Another method of extrusion of a blackhead is done by a doctor. They have a tool called a comedone extractor that clears them one at a time so that it can heal.

Home remedies have also been experimented with to get rid of blackheads. These are not proven, as they are not tested by any professional doctor. However, if any of them work on your skin, then you have found a cheap and easy way to clear up your skin on your own.

Try warming honey and applying it to the spots that you have. Wash it off with warm water after 15 minutes.

Use an oatmeal mask. Mix oatmeal and rose water into a soft, spreadable paste, and then gently massage onto your skin. Leave it until it is completely dried for 15 minutes and then rinse with cold water.

Dilute lemon juice and apply at least 3 times a day to the affected area. Repeat everyday until they completely disappear.

Squeezing blackheads, just as with any acne, is not recommended because it can make the problem worse. However, if you choose to use a blackhead remover at home, you should open your pores first. This can be done by taking a hot shower and letting the steam open your pores. You could also pat your face with a hot towel or hang your head over a pot of boiled water. Be cautious because there is a chance that doing this wrong will result in a bad steam burn..

Choosing The Right Acne Cleanser

You see acne cleanser ads every day and all of them do promise a kind of miracle cure, though very few actually do cure acne. I've been leading a war against acne for years, but even having reduced the fast food to once per day, all the cleansers I've used so far either do nothing or do so little good that it makes no difference at the end. And what is more, they not only curing it but even making it worse sometimes, drying the skin more than the necessary. And then I start from the beginning with the greasy meals that are supposed to compensate for the dehydrated skin and I do not think I can continue with that any longer.

Looking for a cure for acne you have to know that still no matter how advanced science and technology are, there is no effective cure for acne. Yes you can believe me because my face in the moment has more craters on it than the moon itself. Of course some cleansers are not as bad as others, however they are so few and hard to find. And what is more is that even if you decide to go for the most expensive one it is still no good at all. So why then pay a fortune for it, if it still does what the rest of them do - nothing. In my opinion there is nothing as stupid as that, don't you have anything better to spend your money for?

To be honest I have generally tried all known to mankind types of acne cleansers, starting from the simplest, basic ones all the way through to the most technologically advanced and specially formulated ones. And of all those cleansers the one that is still my favorite cleanser today is the Wych-hazel. This all natural astringent has effects very similar to the ones of the rubbing spirit, but without being so rough to the skin. Although it never actually cured my acne, it never made my skin go dry and peel off as lots of others did, and it actually did improve the condition of my skin and beauty.

Apart from the cleanser itself, it is very important to use mild soap, especially if it is possible to get special acne cleanser soap. It is so important because acne itself is a type of dermal irritation normal soap does irritate the skin every time you use it, so it can always make it worse than you have ever imagined. If you do have acne problems don't just go for the most advertised cleanser, go for the natural treatment, it has proved to be better.

Excessive Underarm Sweating What IsThe Easiest And Safest Cure?

Nobody wants to talk about excessive sweating or sweaty underarms, although it's a common problem for a lot of people. It's a visual embarrassment and also a smelly concern!

Sweating is one of the ways we regulate our body temperature, and sweating also keeps our skin moist. If you suffer from excessive sweating, it's not because you have too many sweat glands, it's because of the nerve cell activity of those glands. There are two types of sweat glands, apoccrine and eccrine glands.

Not surprisingly, at least 1% of the population suffers from excessive sweating, especially excessive underarm sweating. Everybody sweats more when they are hot or nervous, but excessive sweating may be partly due to our genes.

It's important to control excessive sweating, and there are many different opinions and views on how to achieve this. If you suffer from excessive sweating, you've probably already tried the commercial antiperspirants and deodorants, and you're still looking for a cure for your problem.

Diet control alone will not cure excessive sweating, but can help reduce it somewhat. Certain foods, such as onions, fish, garlic, and spicy foods like curry, can be smelled in the sweat. Try to reduce your intake of these types of foods.

Underarm hair holds sweat and can make the problem worse. If possible, shave your armpits to reduce the bacteria build-up.

There are other expensive and more painful cures available, such as Botox injections given in very small doses into the skin which can stop excessive sweating for 2-8 months. However, Botox is a poison, and it's natural to have concerns about the long term effects of such treatment.

As a last resort, surgery is often considered, where the sympathetic nerves that control sweating are cut. This type of operation requires general anesthesia, and is not guaranteed to work. The success rate is approximately 30%. Underarm skin can be removed and can be quite effective, but this is not a common operation due to the scarring and is not encouraged or performed very often.

Natural ways to cure excessive sweating are by far the easiest and cheapest way to control the problem. It's definitely safer to try diet control and natural remedies first.

How To Use Fish Oil To Help You Stop Acne

If you want to control acne breakouts, you need to supplement your diet with fish oils which contain omega-3 and omega-6 oils. These fish oil also contains EPA and DHA fatty acids which are necessary for creating prostaglandins.

Normally, enzymes in your body break down omega-6 into DGLA, AA, EPA and DHA fatty acids.

Dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA)

Arachidonic Acid (AA)

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)

Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)

These four fatty acids eventually change into prostaglandins.

What are prostaglandins?

Prostaglandins are chemical hormones that come from omega-3 and omega-6 oils and that help,

regulate every function in your cells and organs.

Postaglandins also keep androgen hormones in control so that excess sebum is not produce in the hair follicle, which results in acne.

This is the reason why Essential Fatty Acids ? Omega-3 and Omega-6 ? are critical foods to eat.

However, eating plenty essential fatty acids may not insure that you produce enough EPA and DHA, which produce the essential prostaglandins.

It is critical for acne and more importantly for your health that you get enough EPA and DHA in your cells and organs so they can produce the required prostaglandins.

To increase the prostaglandins in your cell walls, it is necessary for you to take a fish supplement, which contains both the EPA and DHA.

Of course eating salmon, halibut, and mackerel twice a week will be a plus in providing your body with more EPA and DHA.

Here?s what I use daily. Spectrum Essentials puts out an excellent product called

Omega-3 Norwegian Fish Oil

Two capsules contains

EPA ? 360mg

DHA ? 240mg

Omega-3 ? 892mg

Stearic, Lauric, Palmitic Acids - 508mg

Using the Omega-3 Norwegian Fish Oil is critical in getting relief from acne, so take two capsules per meal.

When your body creates prostaglandins, it creates a good prostaglandin and a bad prostaglandin. Here?s how to encourage the production of good prostaglandins.

?Maintain a ratio of two times more omega-6 than omega-3 in your diet.

?Eating too much omega-6 can lead to producing excess bad prostaglandins.

?Take a multi-vitamin and minerals with your meals to provide these nutrients for breaking down the

essential fatty acids into prostaglandins

?Reduce the amount of meat, saturated fat, dairy, and eggs you eat to reduce the production of AA, which blocks the activities of the good prostaglandins

?Eat cold water fish at least twice a week to provide EPA and DHA to your diet

Include at least 20% of your diet calories as good fats ? omega oils and fish oil. This is essential for controlling the excess activity of your hormones and reducing the inflammation of your acne.

Is Your Environment Contributing to Your Acne?

Is there a possibility that other factors such as the environment may be causing your acne problems? A goal of acne prevention would be to keep your skin pores clear from clogging and becoming infected and irritated, resulting in blemishes and inflammation. But you may need to also take a look at your external environment throughout the day for factors that could trigger skin pore clogging.

Here are some examples of what to look for: grease, oils and sun, like being around open fryers in kitchen areas, or around machine oil and grease in workshops or factories, or out in the sun all day on a construction jobsite. Too much oil, grease or sun on the skin can clog pores and trigger acne and other skin irritations.

Minimize contact by wearing long sleeves and other protective wear and gear and discussing further options with your dermatologist or healthcare provider. With regards to being out in the sun, note that a small amount of sun each day can be fine and healthy.

However, extended periods can trigger the sebaceous glands to create more oil as your skin dries out. At the same time, the dried out skin needs to be cast off or shed at a faster rate than normal. The resulting extra oils and dead skin make a wonderful environment for pore clogging. So here, too, use protective clothing for outdoor activities and apply sunscreen; oil-free products are best for acne-prone people, and those with a minimum protection of SPF 15 and both UVA and UVB protection.

5 Simple Steps To Treating Cystic Acne

If you have cystic acne and want to get rid of it fast then I recommend you to pay close attention and read every word in this article immediately.

Here's why: Cystic acne is painful, both emotionally and physically. And worst of all, it can scar you for life. This is why I recommend you read this article immediately and starting applying what you learn here today.

Here's what you're about to learn: What I am about to reveal to you are 5 simple steps to treating cystic acne fast. It's so effective that you can apply it and see clearer skin in just a few days.

And, none of what I'm about to reveal to you is brain surgery. You can easily learn it within 2 minutes and start applying today.

So what are the 5 steps treating cystic acne? Consider the following:

Step 1 - The first step is to stop eating the types of food that could be causing your cystic acne. The three types of food I recommend you stop eating are sugary foods (such as colas, cake, etc.), dairy foods (such as milk, cheese, etc.), and foods containing trans fat (you're going to have to check the label on that one). Research shows that these three are the common foods that most people with cystic acne are allergic to. So the next time, you go out and buy food make sure you do not buy these types of food.

Step 2 - Stop stressing out - Stressing out can either cause cystic acne or make them worse. However, you can easily relieve stress by doing some yoga, meditations, or deep breathing exercises. These three have been proven to relieve or completely eliminate stress. So pick one of them and do them daily for about 10 to 30 minutes a day.

Step 3 - Keep your skin clean - I highly recommend you gently wash your face with mild soap at least once a day. Especially at night right before you go to sleep.

Step 4 - Start eating more fruits and vegetables - fruits and vegetables are cleansing foods that will cleanse and get rid of toxins in your system (thus, preventing acne). So try eating more fruits and vegetables every day. I'm sure you'll see results just like I did.

Step 5 - Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of purified water a day. Water is extremely important in the detoxifying process. It acts as a catalyst to move acids out of the body. As a matter of fact, water is quite possibly the single most important contributor to healing and preventing acne flare-ups.

Those are the five steps I follow everyday (okay, almost everyday), but after a few days, you may notice that your cystic acne are smaller and not as red as it was before. And the smaller cystic acne may have completely disappear.

Another thing: I highly recommend you follow the above 5 steps everyday. Or at least until your cystic acne disappear.

Now you too can discover the same secrets thousands are now using to eliminate their acne in 2 to 7 days and stop it from ever coming back. For more information visit: http://www.howtogetridofacne.com

The Skin Doesn't Forget

The end of winter, no more short, cold and dark days. Spring is finally here and summer is fast approaching. Hot days and lots of sunshine. But not all fun and sun. The hot sun can pose a great danger for our skin and our children?s skin. In fact, one of the most important factors for feeling young and healthy is the way we take care of our skin during the summer months.

Over the last century, ever-increasing rates of skin cancer have taken some of the greatest tolls on all age groups, young and old. Yet most people don?t realize that skin cancer is a very preventable form of skin cancer, and, that if recognized early enough, is very treatable. The simple fact is, if we take care of our skin during the summer, we can dramatically reduce the chances of ever getting skin cancer in the first place. The chance of getting skin cancer is directly related to the amount of sunlight we expose our skin to, especially during the summer. Furthermore, it has been shown that going to the solarium on a regular basis is also a risk for the development of skin cancer.

Overexposure to UV A and B light from the sun and the solarium damages skin cells. UV A light in spite of its lower energy, is received by the body in much larger doses, and penetrates into the skin easily causing damage. UV light mainly affects the skin and underlying connective tissues by decreasing the quantities of collagen and elastic fibers present in these tissues. With passing time, the skin becomes more wrinkled and flaccid. One of the most important factors in the pathogenesis of cancer is the fact that the absorbed UV light breaks down water molecules and induces the formation of free-oxygen radicals, which are toxic to certain elements of the skin.

For those of us who have a light or very fair complexion, (type I skin tone) avoidance of the sun and solarium as much as possible is recommended. The rest of us should adjust the amount of sun (UV light) exposure to our proper skin tones.

The reason its important to know what type of skin tone you have is because the lighter the skin, the less it is capable of dealing with the damaging elements of the sunlight and thus, more the skin needs to be protected.

It?s not difficult to determine what your skin type is. There are six types and by using the scale below, you can determine for yourself how much skin protection you may need.

Skin type I never turns brown, only burns.
Skin type II browns very slowly and easily burns.
Skin type III browns easily and rarely burns.
Skin type IV is typical of that of southern Europeans (Mediterranean type).
Skin type V is slightly pigmented similar to those living in India.
Skin type VI is black.

If you fall into either of the first two categories, your skin must be protected at all times from the dangerous effects of the sun!!!!!

Skin cancer can be broken down into Melanoma- and non-Melanoma types. The latter consists of both squamous cell- and basal cell skin cancer. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. The proliferation of pigmented skin cells anywhere in the body can, if not diagnosed and treated early, cause death. The frequency of Melanoma around the world is increasing at very rapid rates!!

Squamous cell type of skin cancer is also a malignant form of skin cancer that is directly related to the amount of sun exposure and can quickly spread to other parts of the body.

Basal cell type skin cancer is not malignant and thus wont spread to other parts of the body. However, there is local destruction of the affected skin areas and thus excision of the lesion is a must.

Well, you may ask how do I protect myself from the dangers of the skin cancer? The answers may not be as difficult to follow as you may think. First and foremost, always protect skin of young children and kids. Their skins are sensitive to sun exposure and burning the skin only increases the risk in later years of developing cancer. It is important to remember that the many years of continuous sun exposure increase the chance of getting skin cancer. In other words, the skin doesn?t forget!! Sporadic sun exposure is more than enough to guarantee a nice brown skin color and the proper production of vitamin D in the body.

If someone wants to get a quick tan, than be sure to use self-browning creams, but remember, they wont protect your skin from sun overexposure and burning. Carotin derivative products have been shown to protect the skin from within and in general have an anti-cancer effect.

During the hot months, a good rule of thumb is to avoid strong sun exposure in the middle of the day, say between 2 and 3 pm, when the sun is hottest. Try to stay in the shade as much as possible and when going into the sun, put on a hat, sunglasses and a shirt just to be sure. Sun tanning protective creams are also a must. A wide spectrum UV protection and a minimum factor of 15 should be applied to the skin at all times for maximum protection. But remember, the best protection from skin cancer is to avoid the exposure to the skin.

Finally, and equally important, is that we recognize on ourselves any first signs of potential cancer. Especially be aware of any small wounds or scars on the skin that don?t seem to heal after a month or so. Be aware of skin moles that suddenly begin to itch, bleed, peel, grow, change color or become painful. In any of the above instances, be sure to contact your dermatologist immediately for a full check up. Remember, early diagnosis and treatment along with regular screening is the best way to ensure many happy, healthy summers to come.

Acne Scar Solutions

Acne is a common skin infection that affects over 80% of youth and 5% of adults. When acne eventually heals, it leaves ugly blemishes called acne scars. These become permanent if they are not treated in time. Acne scars are damaging to the ego and personality of an individual, and a lot of time and money has been invested in research to treat this problem.

Acne scars are classified by size, shape and appearance they are identified as Icepick, Boxcar and Rolling. They are also tagged as early or permanent on the basis of their duration. Early scars respond well to topical medications. Permanent scars require surgical intervention. Presently, scars are treated with combinations of topical skin care medications in tandem with carefully selected surgical and skin resurfacing procedures.

At least a half dozen surgical procedures are also performed to repair acne scars. Each has benefits and pitfalls and a surgeon will closely examine the patient?s age, sex, medical history, skin type and type of scarring before agreeing to perform surgery. Cost is also discussed, as it can be quite expensive.

When dermal fillers are used, a surgeon will inject fillers such as collagen and hyaluronic acid derivatives into the skin. This raises the base of the scar to the level of normal skin. The ?punch excision? procedure is used in

icepick and boxcar type scars and relies on making incisions in the skin with a punch biopsy tool and stitching the skin edges together. The new scar heals, leaving a clear skin. Punch excision with skin graft replacement is a variant of the punch excision method. Instead of suturing the skin after excision, surgeons use a skin graft to repair the scar. Punch elevation is used on deep boxcar scars that have sharp edges and normal appearing bases. Here the base of the scar is excised and elevated to the surface of the skin. Sutures and glue are used to join the edges together. Subcutaneous Incision is used for treating rolling scars and centers on the use of a special beveled needle that is inserted under the skin and used to cut the binding tissue in the scar. The resulting bruises fade after about 1 week. Laser resurfacing is used to burn the top layer of the skin and reduce it to the same level as the base of the scars.

Prevention is always better than cure. Simple precautions such as avoiding strong sunlight, using medications like tretinoin and alpha hydroxyl acids, avoiding picking scabs, regular exercising and dietary control go a long way in preventing acne scars and saving a lot of embarrassment and expenses.

Supplementing with MSM: Your Ticket to Healthier Joints

The bulk of the research on MSM has been done under the direction of Doctor Stanley Jacob and Doctor Robert Herschler at the Oregon Health Sciences Institute in Portland. They have been examining the effects of MSM and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for 40 years. In case you?re wondering what the connection is between MSM and DMSO?MSM is the major metabolite of DMSO with the added advantage that it remains in the body longer than DMSO and it does not produce sulfur?s offending odor.

Sulfur is as basic to life as water and air, and yet its value is commonly overlooked. It is the eighth most abundant element in all living organisms and plays and important role in human nutrition. As a matter of fact, it is an important element in more than 150 compounds in the body?tissues, enzymes, hormones, anti-bodies and antioxidants. Sulfur is stored in every cell of the body?particularly in the hair, nails and connective tissue of the joints and skin. Sulfur is an important structural component of the connective tissue that joins muscles to bones.

What is nature?s richest source of sulfur? Answer: MSM

Doctor Jacob?s research provided solid evidence of the power of MSM to perform important tasks related to joint problems. Because sulfur bonds are essential structural features in all connective tissues, sulfurous compounds such as MSM have tremendous potential to benefit people with joint-cartilage degenerative conditions. Although it remains to be studied more, MSM?s high sulfur content may also prove beneficial in treating similar diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and temporal mandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ).

One preliminary double-blind study conducted by UCLA School of Medicine and Dr Ronald M Lawrence, Assistant Clinical Professor of the UCLA School of Medicine, followed 16 patients with degenerative arthritis or joint disease. The patients who took MSM daily for six weeks reported an 80% reduction in pain. Only two of those taking the placebo reported decreased pain?20%. Doctor Lawrence received the Healthy American Fitness Leaders Award, presented by the president?s council on physical fitness and sports, as well as the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Before the dawn of highly processed modern diets, foods were an important sulfur source. Due to air, soil and water pollution, over-farming, irrigation, and deforestation, our food is severely mineral depleted. It is therefore very important that you replace these minerals?especially sulfur.

The best type of MSM to take are the raw crystals. It is the most bio-available and economical form. It is more economical to take higher dosages of pure crystals for therapeutic benefits rather than tons of capsules. Please make sure that your source is pure and does not have fillers as there are many sub par msm supplements on the market.

Sunburn Home Remedies

If you are suffering from sunburn, but do not want to go to the doctor, there are several home remedies that you can use to treat your condition. In many cases, these home remedies can provide you with better treatment than anything that you would get from your doctor.

One of the best home remedies for sun burn is to apply cold water to the affected areas. This can be done by simply placing cold compressions on the area for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. If you are looking for a more long term solution, you can soak in a bath of cold water. This may be a bit uncomfortable on the rest of your body, but it will feel great on your sunburn.

Another sunburn home remedy that is easy to follow includes nothing more than drinking a lot of water. By loading up on water you will be fighting dehydration, and at the same time speeding up the healing process.

There are also many sprays and lotions that you can put on the affected areas. The good thing about these medications is that they can be bought over the counter, and they are usually what doctors recommend anyhow. You should look for the lotion that contains aloe vera. This will be sure to speed up the healing process, while also making your skin feel much better.

Finally, don?t forget the ever popular calamine lotion if the itching is killing you. This has been proven to be one of the best ways to take the itching sensation out of sun burnt skin.

Overall, there are many home remedies that can help relieve your sunburn. There is really no reason to see the doctor because you should be able to find your own solution without much trouble at all.

Why Wasn't I Told This About Acne As A Teenager?

I don?t know if it was puberty or hormonal upheaval but friends I do know this, my teenage years were miserable because of one thing: Acne.

Well, based on what some people say about Positive thinking and all, I guess I allowed it to have too much control over me. However, at that age, how the heck was I to know about all that? Moreover, with bumps, bumps and more bumps all over my face, it was kind of hard you know. I doubt if any girl would have wanted to kiss a guy with a big red bump nestled on his lip today or his nose the next.

Needless to say those were sad years and had I known then what I know now about acne, folks, it would have been a different story. Either way it goes, I still come across helpless and understandably sad teenagers almost on a daily basis so if it helps any: if you are a teenager or know of a teenager who is plagued with pimples, here are a few tips that should help you cure your acne in no time.

1. First and foremost, I care not what some sites and product endorsers say about how diet doesn?t affect acne; you have got to make a change in your eating habits, plain and simple. You are what you eat. If you want to have clearer skin and the added bonus of improved health, of course eating right will be essential. That said: Fruits and vegetables friends. Shop more in the produce aisle and steer clear of the snack stands at the cash register. I know it may sound boring for a teenager but trust me, it?s worth the sacrifice and this forms the basis of an internal acne treatment right there from its root cause.

2. For external acne-care, you could learn such simple tips as facial massaging and exercises. However, (now I?m speaking from what I went through and believe me I had acne BAD?) simply washing your face with nothing but clean hands and plain cool water may perhaps be the most efficient way to clean the pores. Combined with the facial massaging and occasional steaming of the face, this will be very sufficient to clean the skin.

3. Change your pillowcases daily and make sure you have a towel exclusively for your face or you could employ the use of paper towels.

4. If you use greasy hair-products, shampoo the hair before retiring or at least use a clean do-rag to hinder the introduction of oily substances to the pillowcase and inevitably your face while asleep.

5. On that subject, try to also sleep on the right side. Besides checking against contaminations getting on the face, this is great for the heart and lungs and allows for a better and restful sleep (which co-incidentally helps with controlling acne.)

6. Deal with stressful situations amicably. This is another topic into itself but briefly these work: Proper diet (factor #1), proper thinking habits and exercise.

For stress, allow me to mention Yoga-don?t have the space to explain why, but friends, with its sun-exercises and its derivative, Hindu push-ups, Yoga is awesome for stress-relief. Moreover, for teenagers who are more likely to engage in sports and other recreational activities, you?ll be getting the added advantage of improving your fitness levels and with your own body weight at that.

Boy, had I known of some of these in my time. Well, don?t let the story of my teenage years be yours, a sad one because of one thing-Acne.

With the tips above, I can confidently assure you it won?t be the case. Just remember you owe me and my payment is to pass it on to your friends if they need it. (I want every teen with acne to know of this?chuckle)

Here?s to a clearer skin naturally.

2006 Lung Cancer Stats for California Good News or Bad?

The California Cancer Registry and the American Cancer Society have just released a new booklet California Cancer Facts and Figures, 2006. For those of you living in California with any form of cancer, I urge you to get this informative booklet.

For this report, I will just be focusing on the stats for Lung Cancer in California. California is a leader in tobacco tax initiatives. Following the cancer trends in California will determine what measures the rest of the country must take to decrease the lung cancer rates overall.

Good News! - Basically

Basically, the news is very good. From the period of 1988 - 2002, all types of incidences of cancer in California went down by 12%. Cancer mortality declined by 19%. Thanks to Proposition 99 - the California tobacco control initiative passed in 1988, tobacco-related cancers sharply declined, much more than any other state. Tobacco-related cancers include cancers of the lung, larynx, mouth, pancreas, stomach and bladder. However, lung cancer still causes more deaths than any other cancer.

What About New Cases?

Out of all Californians alive today, about 15 million will eventually get some form of cancer, that is about two in five. Over the years, cancer will strike around three out of every four families. This year alone, there will be more than 15 new cases diagnosed every hour of every day. For men, of all the new cases diagnosed, 13% of them will have lung cancer. For women, that number is 12%.

Tobacco-Related Cancers

Presently, about 85% of lung cancer is caused by cigarette smoking. However, many other cancers are caused by tobacco as well. Overall, one of every three cancer deaths is due to tobacco. The incidence of lung cancer decreased by 26% in the time period mentioned above. Needless to say, for those smokers who have quit smoking, your chances of getting lung cancer decreases over time. After 15 years, the risk is only slightly higher than among people who have never smoked.

Secondhand Smoke

I think we all know by now that secondhand smoke has been determined to cause cancer in humans. But did you know that every year in the U.S., about 3,000 non-smoking adults die of lung cancer directly as a result of secondhand smoke? The most recent high-profile example is Dana Reeve, wife of Christopher Reeve. It is believed she may have contracted it from secondhand smoke as a result of her years as an entertainer in music clubs.

Secondhand smoke is particularly harmful to children. The good news is in 2004, more than 80% of California households with children younger than 5 completely stopped smoking in the home.

Alarming Smoking Trends

Given that lung cancer rates in California have dropped significantly, it would be logical to assume that the smoking rates have also dropped, wouldn't it? And in fact they have, among most adults and teenagers. In 2004, 15% of California adults still smoked.

The alarming trend is the increase in 18-24 year old smokers. They are the fastest growing rate of smokers in California and the tobacco companies are targeting them as the smokers of the future. The smoking rate for 18-24 year olds was 18% in 2004.

What Can Be Done?

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in California. All cancers caused by tobacco and heavy use of alcohol can be prevented completely. In 2006, 18,000 Californians will die because of tobacco use.

Early diagnosis can save lives by identifying cancer when it is in the curable stage. The five year survival rate for most cancers is very good if it's caught early. Unfortunately, the statistics for lung cancer are not so good, mostly because it is difficult to diagnose early enough.

The California tobacco control initiative has helped to put a dent in the lung cancer rate. Californians need to stay informed and aware. More cigarette tax legislation is on the way.

What Does Holism Really Mean For Healing?

The whole is more than the sum of its parts. -- Aristotle

Let's talk about quick fixes versus real fixes in health care options. Quick fixes may work quickly --- and stop working quickly.

For acute problems, like an occasional headache, quick fixes like an aspirin can make a lot of sense. For chronic disorders and diseases, however, we need lasting -- and more far-reaching -- help.

It is no accident that more people search the Internet for keywords related to alternative medicine rather than complementary or integrative medicine. Clearly, most people with chronic disorders and diseases are likely to start off on one or more conventional drugs that they have to take. But many people want more options, i.e., alternatives.

Once the shock of a diagnosis wears off, what you need are true options -- alternatives. Yet, as a consumer, you often assume that drugs -- or treatments that you use in a drug-like way -- must always be the centerpiece of the treatment. This all goes back to another unwise assumption, that is, that the way to treat symptoms in a body part is to block the body part from expressing the symptoms.

Suppressing the expression of symptoms cannot lead to true holistic healing, by definition. It simply re-arranges the disease so that the person develops a problem somewhere else. There can be a big cost to the person as a whole for blocking symptom expression in one place without truly healing the underlying problem. A useful analogy might be squeezing a balloon in one place, which forces the air inside to bulge into another. The air is still there, but the location is rearranged within the balloon.

For example, using steroid creams to stop a rash on the skin may lead to the later development of asthma or depression. The skin isn?t showing symptoms any more, but the lungs or the brain are. Conventional medicine might say that there is a different mechanism of disease in the lungs or the brain, making it ?absurd? to think that the asthma is related to the suppression of skin symptoms. And it is true that the mechanisms of asthma are different from the mechanisms of a skin rash, if you focus just on local structures and processes.

However, even at the forefront of conventional medicine, scientists are beginning to recognize that the body is a network of networks of systems. Genes and proteins themselves function in networks of activity. There is a complex and coordinated organization of interrelated and interdependent functions at work all the time, behind the scenes of the obvious physical structures.

Well-established forms of alternative medicine, such as acupuncture, show you that you are an indivisible whole. Treating at a particular acupuncture point has far-reaching effects in body parts that are far distant from the specific location in which the needle was inserted. Acupuncturists believe that the information travels by way of special pathways called meridians. Even state-of-the-art scientific research with brain imaging technology shows that putting an acupuncture needle into a point in the foot can change activity in far distant, but specific regions of the brain other than those just involved in registering pain.

When people say they are getting ?holistic? treatment, they often mean that the mind affects the body ? and vice versa. They try to make a few changes in their lifestyle to reduce stress. But real holism is far more than just stress reduction.

A truly holistic way of looking at chronic health problems is that the symptoms are a major and persistent message from your body part that you as a whole living system are out of alignment with yourself. This situation can push you far off the path and away from fulfilling your unique life?s purpose.

In real holism, things that happen in one body part have consequences for function in the rest of the system as a whole. What this means for the best way to use alternative medicine is that you want to use the treatments to heal you as a whole, not as a collection of body parts. Constitutionally-oriented systems of care such as acupuncture/Chinese medicine, classical homeopathy, and Ayurveda are well-established holistic options that treat the person as a whole. Even if you come to the practitioner with a specific symptom or problem with a body part, their diagnostic and treatment approaches, though different from each other in the specifics, are geared to realign the function of your malfunctioning body part to resume its proper role within you as a whole.

Similarly, you could use a vitamin or an herb -- or even guided imagery (e.g., killing cancer cells) - in a drug-like way to suppress symptoms in a particular body part. But, for real holistic treatment, it is wiser to learn more about how to use natural products and mind-body methods to support your overall healing process throughout you as a living system of interconnected and interdependent parts (e.g., dialoguing in imagery with the body part to ask what it is trying to express symbolically about your issues as a whole). That is true holism.

Top 10 Tips to Avoid Acne

You're Not Alone. Over 90% of us will have acne at some point in our lives. Many people will continue to have acne as adults. There are likely many factors that play a role in adult acne: genetics, hormones, the environment, stress and using the wrong skin care products. The tips below will help you to effectively manage acne and achieve clear, healthy skin.

1. Use chemical-free, natural skin care products to cleanse your pores and minimize new blemishes from forming. Cleansing your face every day with the right skin care products is the first and most important step to achieve clear, healthy skin.

2. Always use a clean washcloth every time you wash your face. Acne causing bacteria can quickly form on damp washcloths and transfer back to your skin the next time you use it. You must use a clean washcloth ever morning and night.

3. Keep hair and hands off your face. Both contain excess dirt and oils that transfer to your face causing pores to clog and bacteria to grow. Keeping your pores clean is critical to your success in fighting acne.

4. Drink lots of water and eat a balanced diet including fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet is important for great skin and water helps to flush away toxins while hydrating your skin.

5. Don't pick! Picking at or pinching blemishes transfers excess oils and will cause deeper acne lesions which may scar. The best strategy is to get your acne under control fast by using a (non-chemical) natural acne treatment every morning and night.

6. Acne on the back and shoulders can be aggravated by wearing clothing that doesn't allow the skin to breathe. Always wear breathable fabrics like cotton and shower immediately after workouts to remove excess sweat, dirt, and oils.

7. Your skin reflects your overall health and well being. It is important to manage your stress levels by getting enough sleep. Your skin needs rest to rebuild and repair itself. Exercise will help to reduce stress while maximizing oxygen delivery to the skin.

8. Women should not use heavy oil-based lotions and makeup. It is important to only use oil-free makeup that allows your skin to breathe. Oil-based makeup can trap synthetic chemicals and oil in your pores causing bacteria and acne to form.

9. Avoid excess consumption of refined sugar and nutritional supplements that contain iodine. Your body needs to work hard to process these sugars and studies have show a correlation between diets high in refined sugar and acne.

10. Don't smoke. Not only is it bad for your lungs, it can also affect your skin's health and ability to heal. Smoking can dry out your skin and also cause wrinkles!

Acupressure Lays Insomnia To Rest

Insomnia is more serious than being startled awake by every noise or tossing and turning while trying to fall asleep, because insomnia results in day-time tiredness, irritability and, at worst, depression. Insomnia is most often caused by sleep disorders, but also by emotional stress or stimulants. In addition to an overactive mind, stress, anxiety and fear, also caffeine, some medications and herbs easily disturb the quality of your sleep and cause sleeping problems. Physical pain is a common cause of insomnia as well. Short-time symptoms of insomnia are bearable, although frustrating, but night after night for months or years, the most serious issues of insomnia accumulate and can cause serious health problems.

Many insomniacs rely on sleeping tablets and other sedatives to try to get some rest. Others use herbs such as valerian, chamomile, lavender, or passion-flower. On the other hand, acupressure is a safe, drug-free technique that has been used to treat insomnia sufferers by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners for thousands of years. In many cases, acupressure is sufficient to break the insomnia cycle without the need for sedatives and sleeping tablets.

Acupressure, with its focus on healing whole syndromes rather than individual symptoms, has shown great success treating those who experience insomnia. It also has been widely successful in relieving depression, stress and physical pain. With ongoing studies showing promising results in the treatment of numerous health conditions, acupressure is gaining popularity as a way to overcome all kinds of troubling ailments. Some relatively recent areas of study include both alertness and fatigue, and this form of treatment can be beneficial in both instances as it works with the body?s vital energies. Acupressure can be used to help treat insomnia due in part to its benefits in promoting better overall health and relaxation, as well as the treatment of related problems such as back pain that may be contributing to the sleep disturbance.

Like other conditions which can benefit from acupressure treatment, using this approach to treating insomnia allows you to steer clear of medications that can lead to a host of side effects. Safe, natural, and drug-free, acupressure involves a whole approach to better health and wellness, and encourages you to become more in tune with your body?s needs. Pain and illness are indications of a problem that needs to be addressed, and acupressure works to solve the underlying issues, rather than just treat the symptoms.

Acupressure treatment can be administered by a trained practitioner, or you can learn techniques to help yourself. Either way, the benefits are likely to be numerous, as you improve the flow of vital energies throughout your body, and experience improved energy or relaxation.

Commonly noted benefits of acupressure include increased immune function and decreased stress levels, improved digestive abilities, better sleeping patterns, decrease in various pains and a general sense of well being, which are all excellent treatments for insomnia.

Healing Power of Asanas (Part IV)

Halasana (Plough pose):

Lie flat on your back with legs and feet together, arms by your side with fists closed near your thigh keeping your legs straight, slowly raise them to angles of 300, 600 and 900, pausing slightly at each point. Gradually, raise your legs above your head without bending your knees and then move them behind until they touch the floor. Stretch your legs as far as possible so that your chin presses tightly against the chest while your arms remain on the floor as in the original position. Hold the pose from between 10 seconds to three minutes, breathing normally. To return to the starting position slowly reverse the procedure.

This asana relieves tension in the back, neck, and legs and is beneficial in the treatment of lumbago, spinal rigidity and rheumatism, myalgia, arthritis, sciatics and asthma.

Bhujangasana (Cobra pose):

Lie on your stomach with your legs straight and feet together, toes pointing backwards. Rest your forehead and nose on the ground. Place your palms below the shoulders and your arms by the side of the chest. Inhale and slowly raise your head, neck, chest and upper abdomen from the navel up. Bend your spine back and arch your back as far as you can looking upwards. Maintain this position and hold your breathe for a few seconds.

Exhale, and slowly return to the original position.

This asana has great therapeutic value in the treatment of diseases like cervical spondylitis, bronchitis, asthma and eosinophillia. It removes weakness of the abdomen and tones up the reproductive system in women. It exercises the vertebrae, back muscles and the spine.

Shalabhasana (Locust pose):

Lie flat on your stomach, with your legs stretched out straight, feet together, chin and nose resting on the ground, looking straight ahead. Move your arms under the body, keeping them straight, fold your hands into fists and place them close to the thighs. Now, raise your legs up keeping them straight together and stretching them as far back as possible without bending your knees and toes. Hold this position for a few seconds and repeat four or five times.

This asana helps in the treatment of arthirits, rheumatism and low backache. The whole body is strengthened by this asana especially the waist, chest, back and neck. Persons suffering from high blood pressure or heart disease should not practice this asana.
